Twenty students from a range of academic disciplines, along with three members of the public, sat the German language exams on campus in early May. The results were excellent, with all students achieving their respective levels, and certificates were presented in the final week of May.
Participants completed German language courses at the appropriate CEFR levels across both semesters of the 2024/25 academic year, and in addition to their regular classes, they attended a series of preparatory workshops specifically designed to support exam preparation.
The Goethe-Zertifikat, awarded by the Goethe-Institut, is a prestigious international qualification that certifies German language proficiency. It is widely recognised by academic institutions and employers worldwide.
These results represent a fantastic achievement for the students and are testament to the exceptional teaching, motivation and support provided by the team.

The Skills Centre offers courses in Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish to students, staff and the wider community. All courses are designed to lead to internationally-recognised language qualifications which enhance employability, strengthen placement and study abroad applications, and open doors to global career opportunities.
Having passed the A2 Goethe-Zertifikat last year, completing B1 this year felt like a natural progression. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning German through the Skills Centre for the past three years and the opportunity to get an internationally-recognised qualification for my efforts was too good to miss! Carmen and Moira are incredibly supportive; the additional workshops helped me not only prepare for the specifics of the exam but also helped improve all aspects of my German comprehension generally. Going forward I intend to continue learning German into the final year of my PhD, working towards B2. My motivations for continuing to learn German are completely different to my motivations for starting. Completing this course and achieving the B1 Goethe-Zertifikat has given me the confidence to pursue job opportunities in Germany following graduation, something I really hadn’t anticipated when I started!
